Causes of pain after Knee Replacement Surgery

While knee replacement surgery aims to alleviate pain, some patients experience discomfort afterward. Here's a breakdown of potential causes:
•    𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐭-𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐚𝐢𝐧:  Pain and inflammation are expected in the initial recovery period. Medications and physical therapy can effectively manage this.
•    𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐋𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠: This typically occurs years after surgery, but rarely soon after. Pain may worsen with activity and can indicate a loose implant needing revision surgery.
•    𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧:  This is a serious complication with symptoms like increased pain, redness, swelling, and fever. Early detection is crucial, so prompt medical attention is essential.
•    𝐊𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐩 𝐈𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞𝐬:  Problems with the kneecap (patella) can arise, causing pain. This might be due to improper tracking of the kneecap or instability.
•    𝐒𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬:  Scar tissue formation can lead to stiffness, limiting movement and causing discomfort. Consistent physical therapy exercises are key to regaining flexibility.
•    𝐎𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬:  Less common causes include nerve problems, blood vessel issues, and complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS).

If you are experiencing persistent or worsening pain after knee replacement, it's crucial to consult Dr. Biren Nadkarni for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
