Microfracture: Stimulating Natural Cartilage Repair for Small Lesions

Cartilage damage in the knee can be a major source of pain and limitation, especially in young and active individuals. One effective treatment for small cartilage defects is Microfracture Surgery — a minimally invasive arthroscopic technique.

During this procedure, tiny holes are created in the underlying bone (subchondral bone). This stimulates the release of bone marrow stem cells, which then form new repair tissue over the damaged area.

While the newly formed tissue, called fibrocartilage, is not as durable as the original cartilage, it significantly helps in reducing pain and improving joint function.

Microfracture surgery is often recommended for younger patients with small, localized cartilage lesions who wish to return to their active lifestyle without undergoing more extensive procedures.

Early diagnosis and proper treatment can make a big difference in joint preservation and long-term mobility.
