Microfracture: Stimulating Natural Cartilage Repair for Small Lesions

Cartilage damage in the knee can be a major source of pain and limitation, especially in young and active individuals. One effective treatment for small cartilage defects is Microfracture Surgery — a minimally invasive arthroscopic technique.

During this procedure, tiny holes are created in the underlying bone (subchondral bone). This stimulates the release of bone marrow stem cells, which then form new repair tissue over the damaged area.

While the newly formed tissue, called fibrocartilage, is not as durable as the original cartilage, it significantly helps in reducing pain and improving joint function.

Microfracture surgery is often recommended for younger patients with small, localized cartilage lesions who wish to return to their active lifestyle without undergoing more extensive procedures.

Early diagnosis and proper treatment can make a big difference in joint preservation and long-term mobility.

Osteochondral Autograft Transfer System (OATS): Transplanting Healthy Cartilage for Focal Defects

OATS is an advanced surgical technique used to treat small, localized cartilage defects in the joint. In this procedure, healthy cartilage and the underlying bone are transferred from a less critical area of your joint to the damaged region.

This offers immediate structural restoration, helping recreate a smooth joint surface — thereby reducing pain, improving mobility, and preserving joint function.

OATS is particularly effective for younger, active patients with small, focal cartilage defects who wish to return to pain-free movement without resorting to joint replacement.

Transfers cartilage and bone grafts within the joint
Ideal for small, localized cartilage defects
Provides immediate joint surface restoration

If you’re experiencing persistent joint pain due to cartilage damage, early diagnosis and personalized treatment can make all the difference.

Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation (ACI): Repairing Cartilage with Your Own Cells

Cartilage injuries can be challenging to treat, especially when the damage is deep or extensive. One of the most advanced and effective techniques for such cases is ACI – Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation.

This is a two-stage procedure designed to restore your joint’s natural cartilage:
Stage 1: Healthy cartilage cells are carefully harvested from your joint using a minimally invasive arthroscopic method.
Stage 2: These cells are then cultured in a lab and later implanted into the damaged area under a special protective patch.

The implanted cells grow and regenerate new, natural cartilage tissue, ensuring long-term durability and improved joint function.

ACI is especially suitable for young, active patients with large or isolated cartilage defects, helping them regain mobility and return to their active lifestyles with confidence.

If you’re experiencing persistent joint pain or cartilage damage, it’s worth discussing with Dr. Biren Nadkarni whether ACI could be the right option for you.
